The British practically invented Summer Holidays! During the 19th century, working class families embraced 'holy' days, Sundays or bank holidays, as days of leisure when they could get away to the seaside. They mostly flocked to Blackpool, Bournemouth and Bognor Regis. The British Summer Holiday peaked in the 1960s when caravans where very popular and allowed people to get away cheaply.

By the 21st century, travellin by plane had become a lot cheaper and summer holidays had expanded to 2/3 months rather than just a few 'holy' days, so people tended to travel further afield by going abroad.

However today, due to the recession people are less keen to spend their money in foreign countries, especially when the pound has become a lot weaker. So a British Sumemr Holiday at the Seaside has become very popular again and luckily, the seaside is just as entertaining as it was in its hey-day! Check out these seaside destinations for some fun in the sun!
